WALT DISCO HEY BOY (YOU'RE ONE OF US)

The last time we featured Glaswegian alternative synth-pop band Walt Disco, we dug into their flamboyant, gothy single ‘Past Tense’. Now, this gender-fluid fivesome is back on the pages of TMR with ‘Hey Boy (You're One Of Us)’, a punching piece of ‘80s-inspired New Wave and queer-pop expression. The video is also very in keeping with their local flavour; filmed earlier this year in Troon, on the West Coast of Scotland, we see these fearless band mates defy biology by not freezing to death on the beach. As singer James Power recalls: “For two separate days, I froze my nipples off at the beach in Troon and none of it would have been possible without the help of our lovely flatmates Ally Scott of Lucia and The Best Boys and Anna Acquroff of Medicine Cabinet. As with the Cut Your Hair video, our shaky iPhone footage was masterfully pieced together by Bryan M Ferguson.” Echoing the solidarity of Walt Disco’s statement “hey boy, you’re one of us”, the video takes inspiration from the myths of mermaids and sirens who pivot between sea and land, in the same way that Power flows through degrees of sexuality and gender. We love Walt Disco here at TMR and are especially excited for the release of their Young Hard and Handsome EP, out this autumn. - Hannah Thacker
